How to become an Assam Police Constable or Sub-Inspector (2026): eligibility, PET, written test

Last checked against official sources on 20 Aug 2026.

Assam Police recruitment is run by one body only: the State Level Police Recruitment Board, Assam (SLPRB), Rehabari, Guwahati 781008, website slprbassam.in. Nobody else recruits constables or sub-inspectors for Assam Police. If a website asks you for money to apply, it is not SLPRB. The official advertisements say plainly: there is no application fee.

The two doors, and what they pay

Constable is the Class X or Class XII entry. Sub-Inspector is the graduate entry. Both were advertised in Dec 2025, so these are current figures, not history.

Constable (UB and AB) Advertisement dated 05-12-2025 for 1,052 posts of Constable (UB) and 663 posts of Constable (AB), in the pay scale of Rs. 14,000 to Rs. 70,000 with Grade Pay Rs. 5,600 plus allowances.

  • Register once on the SLPRB application portal. The rules are strict: register only once for all advertisements, with your name exactly as on the HSLC certificate. Generating multiple application IDs on different mobile numbers cancels your candidature.
  • Keep one mobile number active until the whole recruitment is over. Admit cards and notices key off it.
  • Upload the mandatory documents: photo, signature, age proof, HSLC and HS pass certificates and mark sheets as applicable, employment exchange registration card, and a caste certificate from a Government of Assam competent authority if you are claiming reservation. A caste certificate from another state is not accepted.
  • Start running now, not after the notification. The physical test is the stage that eliminates the most people, and you cannot build stamina in three weeks.
  • Carry every original document to the physical test. No document is accepted after PET and PST are over, and every document must have been issued on or before the last date of application.
  • Clear the physical stage, then the written test, then the viva. The order differs between Constable and SI. See below.
  • Final medical and police verification before appointment.

The selection stages

Constable: physical first, then written

The advertisement lists the phases as PET and medical examination followed by PST, then the written test, then the oral viva voce. This order matters. If you fail any physical event you are out before you ever sit the paper.

PET, men 3,200 m race: 20 marks for 600 seconds (10 minutes) or less, marks falling with time, and no marks and disqualification beyond 840 seconds (14 minutes). Long jump: minimum 335 cm to qualify, 20 marks at 500 cm. Chin ups, only for Constable (AB) men: fewer than 4 is disqualification, 4 gives 10 marks, 14 or more gives 20 marks.
PET, women 1,600 m race: 20 marks for 330 seconds (5 minutes 30 seconds) or less, no marks and disqualification beyond 480 seconds (8 minutes). Long jump: minimum 244 cm to qualify, 20 marks at 389 cm.
Medical and PST Medical examination after PET, then the Physical Standard Test on height and chest. PST carries no marks. It is pass or fail.
Written test Shortlisting at 5 times the number of posts per category on PET marks. 100 multiple choice questions on an OMR sheet, half a mark each, total 50 marks. No negative marking. Questions at Class IX and X level.
Written subjects Elementary Arithmetic, General English, Logical reasoning and mental ability, Assam’s History, Geography, Polity and Economy, and General Awareness, General Knowledge and current affairs.
Question paper languages Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, English.
Viva voce Maximum 5 marks, with candidates called at twice the number of vacancies on PET plus written marks.
Academic weightage (UB) Up to 5 marks on Higher Secondary result: 2 marks for 45 to 59.99 percent, 3 marks for 60 to 74.99 percent, 5 marks for 75 percent and above.
Final total Constable (UB): PET 40 + written 50 + viva 5 + academic 5 = 100. Constable (AB) male: PET 60 + written 50 + viva 5 = 115. Constable (AB) female: PET 40 + written 50 + viva 5 = 95.

Sub-Inspector: written first, then physical

For SI the phases are listed in the opposite order: written test, then PET and medical followed by PST, then oral viva voce. And unlike the Constable paper, the SI paper punishes guessing.

Written test 100 multiple choice questions on an OMR sheet, 1 mark each. Negative marking of half a mark for each wrong answer.
Written subjects Logical reasoning, aptitude and English comprehension. Matters relating to History and Culture of Assam and India. General Knowledge.
Question paper languages Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, English.
Shortlisting for PET 5 times the number of posts per category, on written marks.
PET, men 1,600 m race: 20 marks for 300 seconds or less, disqualification beyond 450 seconds (7.5 minutes). Long jump: minimum 335 cm to qualify, 20 marks at 500 cm. PET total 40 marks.
PET, women 800 m race: 20 marks for 160 seconds or less, 240 seconds is the qualifying time. Long jump: minimum 244 cm to qualify.
Final total Written 100 + PET 40 + NCC 5 + viva voce 5 = 150 marks.

How competitive it honestly is

STRAIGHT ANSWER

The numbers are not symmetric. The Dec 2025 cycle advertised 1,715 constable posts across UB and AB, but only 48 posts of Sub-Inspector (UB) for the whole state. If you are a graduate, apply for both. Treating SI as your only plan when 48 posts are on offer statewide is not ambition, it is arithmetic you have not done.

Two more things that decide results and that nobody tells you early enough. First, the physical stage removes far more candidates than the paper does, and it is the one part you can improve with certainty by training for six months. Second, the marking schemes differ: the Constable paper has no negative marking, so you attempt everything, while the SI paper deducts half a mark per wrong answer, so blind guessing actively destroys your score. Practise both papers the way they are actually marked.
